The village of Tesuque is located in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains north of the Santa Fe Historic Plaza. The Tesuque name is a Spanish variation of the Tewa name, Te Tesugeh Oweengeh. Its meaning, “the village of the narrow place of the cottonwood trees,” describes the landscape today along Bishops Lodge Road to the village.
The village’s history is connected to the Tesuque Pueblo which has been in its present location since 1200 A.D. The Tesuque Pueblo is a historic district and on the National Register of Historic Places.
The village icons are the Tesuque Market and the Tesuque Post Office. Ali MacGraw is one of the many celebrities who have made Tesuque her home. In the last episode of Breaking Bad, Gretchen and Elliott live in a mansion in Tesuque, New Mexico.
